What there is to do

Eight things worth leaving the pool for

Tangalle is well placed — turtles twelve kilometres east, leopards two hours inland, whales an hour west. We will arrange any of it: the jeep, the guide, the breakfast packed to take with you and the four o'clock start.

The photographs on this page are free-licence library images of southern Sri Lanka rather than our own. We have photographed the villa; we have not yet photographed a leopard.

Turtle watching at Rekawa

Rekawa is one of the few beaches in Sri Lanka where turtles come ashore to nest through most of the year, and five species have been recorded here. The conservation project runs guided walks: you wait on the sand in the dark until a ranger finds a turtle coming up the beach, then approach quietly in a small group.

It requires patience — there is no schedule a turtle keeps — and the rules are strict about lights and noise, for good reason. Bring something to sit on and no expectations. We can arrange the guide and the drive over.

Waves breaking against a rock formation at the sea edge

The sea, straight up

Hummanaya blowhole

Hummanaya is said to be the second-largest blowhole in the world. Swell pushes into a channel in the rock and the pressure sends a column of seawater up through a gap in the cliff — sometimes a few metres, sometimes a great deal more.

Go on a day with some sea running, or you will be looking at a hole in a rock. Stand back from the edge and expect to get wet.

Dense green trees beside still water inland from the coast

Cave shrines and a long staircase

Mulkirigala rock temple

A Buddhist cave temple complex cut into a rock outcrop rising out of the paddy inland from Tangalle, with shrines on terraces at several levels and a stairway climbing between them. The reclining Buddha figures and the painted cave ceilings are the reason to come; the view back over the country from the top is the reason to keep climbing.

Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the shrines. Early morning is cooler and quieter.

Leopards, and a great many elephants

Yala and Udawalawe safaris

Yala has the higher density of leopards and the higher density of jeeps to go with it. Udawalawe is the more reliable day out if what you want is elephants — herds of them, often close to the track, with none of the scrum around a leopard sighting.

Either is a long day: you leave the villa around 4am to be at the gate for opening, and you are back mid-afternoon. We will arrange the jeep and a packed breakfast.

Distance
About 85 km either way
How long
A full day, leaving before dawn
Best season
Year round; Yala is usually closed for part of September

Blue whales offshore

Whale watching from Mirissa

The continental shelf runs close to shore off the south coast, which puts blue whales within reach of a morning boat trip out of Mirissa. Sperm whales and spinner dolphins are common too.

Choose an operator that keeps its distance from the animals — we will point you at one. If you are prone to seasickness, take something before you board rather than after.

Lagoon birds and red earth

Kalametiya and Ussangoda

Kalametiya is a coastal lagoon and mangrove sanctuary — herons, egrets, kingfishers, and a long list of migratory waders in season. Best seen from a small boat at first light, with a guide who knows the birds.

Ussangoda is a short drive on: an odd plateau of red earth above the sea where very little grows, wrapped in a Ramayana legend about a crashed flying chariot. Worth the detour for the strangeness of it.

The boats coming in

Tangalle harbour at dawn

The fishing fleet comes in around first light and the catch is sold on the quay within the hour — tuna, seer, mullet, whatever the night produced. It is a working harbour, not a market laid on for visitors, which is exactly why it is worth seeing.

Go at six. If you find something you like the look of, buy it and bring it back — the kitchen at the villa is yours, and a fish that was in the sea at midnight needs very little doing to it.

The beaches, and learning to surf

Red Beach is the closest, about four hundred and fifty metres down a quiet road. Marakkalagoda follows at six hundred, then Goyambokka at a little over a kilometre — small and sheltered between headlands — then Paravi Wella and the long open sweep of Tangalle Beach, both about two kilometres out. Rekawa, where the turtles nest, is twelve.

For surfing, the horseshoe bay at Hiriketiya about 13 km west is the friendliest place on this coast to learn, with board hire and instructors on the sand. We can arrange a lesson and the drive.

A word of caution worth taking seriously: several of these beaches have strong currents and none are patrolled by lifeguards. Ask us before you swim somewhere new.
