Rock formations along the shoreline of southern Sri Lanka

Southern Province, Sri Lanka

Five minutes from the sea

Where we are

Off Pallikkudawa Road

We are on the quiet side of Tangalle, in the stretch of coconut land between the harbour and the turtle beach at Rekawa. Close enough to town for a fish market run before breakfast; far enough out that what you hear at night is the sea and not a road.

Red Beach is about four hundred and fifty metres down the road — five minutes at an unhurried pace, barefoot if you like. Four more beaches lie within a couple of kilometres of the gate, and they get quieter the further you walk.

Getting here

Four ways to arrive

Tell us your flight or train and we will make sure someone is waiting. Transfers are arranged rather than included — see the note below.

Mattala Rajapaksa International (HRI)

The nearest airport, about 57 km inland — call it an hour. It handles far fewer flights than Colombo, so check what is actually flying before you plan around it — but if something suits, it is by far the easiest arrival.

Bandaranaike International, Colombo (CMB)

Where almost everyone lands. About three and a half hours to us on the E01 Southern Expressway — a genuinely good road — leaving it near Beliatta for the last stretch. We can have a car waiting at arrivals.

By train to Beliatta

The southern line now runs as far as Beliatta, about 8 km from the villa. The coastal stretch of that journey is one of the better train rides anywhere, and it costs almost nothing. Book a reserved seat if you can.

By road from elsewhere on the coast

Galle is about 1½ hours, Mirissa and Weligama a little over an hour, Ella around 3 hours through the hills. A driver for the day is a sensible way to do any of these — ask us and we will arrange one.

About transfers. Airport pickup is something we arrange, not something included in the rate. Mattala is about 57 km away and Colombo three and a half hours, so a single flat price would be meaningless — send us your flight and we will quote the actual cost of the car.

A library photograph of the south coast, not our own — we have photographed the villa but not yet the beach.

When to come

The south coast runs opposite to the rest of the island. Our dry season is roughly December to April — calm sea, reliable sun, the busiest months and the best swimming.

May to September brings the southwest monsoon: rain in bursts rather than all day, a bigger swell, greener everything, and far fewer people. The blowhole at Hummanaya is at its most dramatic then, and the villa is at its quietest. October and November sit in between.
